Wijze Raad Podcast: ‘We Live in the Age of Billionaires’

In the fifth and final episode of the Wijze Raad (Wise Council) podcast series, Danny Dorling shares his perspective on the world of the super-rich. Danny is a professor of Human Geography at University of Oxford and a leading expert on social inequality in the United Kingdom. He recently visited the House of Connections, where he was interviewed for the podcast. In the conversation, he explains, among other things, why the United Kingdom could become a potential next “target” for the super-rich.
The podcast series by the Rudolf Agricola School focuses on pressing societal issues. In the first series, the pros and cons of the super-rich were explored. Are the differences between rich and poor becoming too large? Or are billionaires actually the driving force behind innovation and progress?
In this episode, Danny Dorling explains how the United Kingdom has become highly dependent on the United States, especially since Brexit. According to Dorling, the super-rich find the EU rather inconvenient, due to the many regulatory measures in place within the Union.
The power of billionaires is undeniable, Dorling notes. Still, he remains cautiously optimistic. His motto: the course of things will take a different turn automatically. The professor of Human Geography believes that, in the end, many people will come to realize that the age of billionaires is, to say the least, not sustainable. What are you willing to put up with? he concludes.
