Masterplan: Area development

The University of Groningen (UG) is developing a Masterplan for the phased redevelopment of parts of Nijenborgh 4 and the area in front of Feringa Building. This plan explores the spatial possibilities with the aim of creating a future-proof, sustainable, and attractive campus that meets the growing demand for education and research. The Masterplan forms the basis for a phased transformation, in which teaching spaces, networking opportunities, and meeting places will be better facilitated, and office space will be reduced.

First phase: Interfaculty learning centre

As a first step, section 5113 of Nijenborgh 4 will be transformed into an Interfaculty Learning Centre with approximately 6,000 m² gross floor area. The new building will have an open design with shared educational facilities, including:

  • Study areas
  • Computer labs
  • Active Learning Centres with flexible layouts
  • Bicycle cellar

The design team will preserve valuable elements of the original Nijenborgh 4, while renovating and adapting the building to current educational and research needs.

Follow-up phases

At a later stage, sections 5114 through 5116 will also be phased in, providing facilities for Open Innovation and Research. The spatial layout of the campus area in front of Nijenborgh 4 and Feringa Building will also be further developed in a later phase.

Strengthening the technical profile

The redevelopment responds to the structural spatial needs of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, where – despite the addition of the Feringa Building – additional capacity is required. The planned demolition of the Kapteynborg, the demand for educational facilities at the Faculties of Spatial Sciences and Economics and Business, and the desire to strengthen the university's technical profile also make this transformation necessary. That is why Nijenborgh 4 is no longer seen as a demolition site, but as a reusable and adaptable building.
