Machiel Mulder appointed as member of Scientific Climate Council

Machiel Mulder, Professor of Energy Economics and director of the energy transition programmas of UGBS, has been appointed as member of the Scientific Climate Council (WKR). This was announced by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy. This independent advisory council will advise the government on climate policy.
Multidisciplinary board
The WKR is a multidisciplinary board consisting of ten members with diverse backgrounds, including Machiel Mulder and two other University of Groningen professors: Linda Steg (Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences) and Wouter Peters (Faculty of Science and Engineering).
Extremely Proud
Jouke de Vries, president of the Executive Board of the university, is very pleased with the appointment of no fewer than three University of Groningen researchers to the Scientific Climate Council. 'In the Strategic Plan, we have set ourselves the goal of contributing to solutions to the major societal challenges of our time. Climate change presents us with a task that should not be underestimated. A task that requires a cross-disciplinary approach, a combination of scientific knowledge and skills. The appointment of these three professors affiliated with the University of Groningen, experts in the field of behaviour, energy markets and climatology, underlines the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and the strength of our broad university. I am extremely proud of the involvement of our professors in national climate policy.'
Responsibility
Machiel Mulder says to ‘I feel honored to be appointed as member of this advisory board, but more so see the responsibility to provide, in collaboration with the other council members, sound advice on how the greenhouse gas emissions can be strongly reduced, taking into account various other societal interests.’
