Lecture: Sybrand Buma on his family history
Sybrand Buma, mayor of Leeuwarden and RUG alumnus, is coming to Groningen to talk about some books from his father's estate that he donated to the University of Groningen Library last year.
It concerns 17th- and 18th-century books from the estate of Bernhard van Haersma Buma (1932-2020), former mayor of Workum and Sneek. The books were originally the property of Willem Hiddingh (1773-1839), son of a prominent Drenthe family. The names of various successive owners are written on the flyleaf in decorative letters. The books were never sold, but always passed on through inheritance.
The last owner, Bernhard's son Sybrand Buma, mayor of Leeuwarden, became intrigued by the family history behind these books. In his lecture he tells the eventful story of an old family from Drenthe who went to South Africa, fanned out across the world and eventually disappeared into oblivion.
