New at UGBS: Marc Broekema, professor in Corporate Valuation, M&A and Restructuring

Marc Broekema, a highly experienced valuation advisor and court-appointed valuation expert at Kroll, will join the University of Groningen and UGBS as a professor. Starting 1 September, he will play an important role in the Executive Programme in Corporate Restructuring (start: September in Breukelen) and in the Executive Master of M&A and Valuation (start: September in Amsterdam), a joint degree offered by the University of Groningen Business School (UGBS) and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU).
“I find it rewarding to bridge the worlds of practice and academia. In a field as complex and dynamic as M&A and restructuring, in which valuation plays a pivotal role, experienced professionals benefit from both technical depth and sharpened judgement. I look forward to helping participants connect academic insights in these fields with the complexities of high-stakes decision-making.” -- Prof. Marc Broekema
Role in Executive Education, Master’s & Research
Broekema has been appointed by the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) to the special chair ‘Corporate Valuation, Mergers & Acquisitions, and Restructuring’, embedded within the Department of Economics, Econometrics and Finance (EEF). In his new role as Professor of Practice, he will be instrumental in further developing executive education in the fields of M&A, Corporate Valuation, and Restructuring. In addition, he will contribute to the Master's programmes in Finance and International Financial Management, as well as to research within the EEF department.
FEB and UGBS’s education in corporate valuation is focused on equipping students with the tools and knowledge to assess company value and value creation in a variety of contexts, particularly throughout all phases of the M&A process, from strategy to deal execution and post-merger integration, as well as in situations of corporate restructuring.
Track record: Valuation Advisor, Lecturer and Researcher
Broekema is a seasoned professional in business valuation. In addition to his academic appointment, he will continue his role as Managing Director at Kroll (formerly Duff & Phelps), where he previously served as Co-Head Valuation Services Netherlands and, as of 1 July 2025, acts as Head of Expert Services Netherlands.
At Kroll, Broekema specializes in complex valuation issues throughout the corporate lifecycle, including M&A initiatives, general valuation consulting, contentious valuations, restructuring valuations, and the quantification of damages. He also serves as an expert judge (raad) at the Enterprise Chamber of the Amsterdam Court of Appeal, a role he will retain alongside his professorship.
Over the course of his career, Broekema has supported clients across industries and geographical borders with their valuation challenges. His practical experience and track record as a valuation advisor and court-appointed expert bring exceptional value to his teaching and research at FEB and UGBS.
Broekema obtained his PhD at Leiden University, where he conducted empirical research into business valuation and cognitive bias.
