Opening Academic Year 2016-2017

The Opening of the Academic Year 2016-2017 will take place on 5 September in the Martini Church.

Students and staff are most welcome to attend this (annual) ceremony.

Programme (Language: English)
Professors will be expected in the Senate Room by 3.30 p.m.
The cortège will depart at 3.40 p.m.

The ceremony will start at 4 p.m. sharp. Please arrive well on time, as the church doors will close at 3.58 p.m. Those who arrive too late will no longer be admitted.

  • Opening speech by Prof. Elmer Sterken, Rector Magnificus
  • Speeches by Prof. Lodi Nauta and Prof. Bart van Wees, Spinoza Prize winners 2016
  • Award ceremonies of:
    • Mallinckrodt Prize
    • Nicolaas Mulerius Stipendium
    • Sustainable Society Impact Award
  • Musical interlude
  • Award ceremony: Ubbo Emmius medal for contributions to society, awarded to Max van den Berg
  • Award ceremony: Alumnus of the Year, awarded to Luuk van Middelaar

  • Reading by the University Poet 2016 – 2017
  • Speech by Prof. Mario Panizza, Rector Roma Tre University
  • Closing

5.45 – 7 p.m.

  • Reception in the choir of the Martini Church, with Prof. Elmer Sterken proposing a toast.
