We need to talk about ‘Gemeenteraadsverkiezingen’

When:We 11-03-2026 20:30 - 22:00Where:USVA, Munnekeholm 10

Many internationals living in Groningen are not aware that EU citizens are entitled to vote in Dutch municipal elections. Yet these elections play a crucial role in shaping the city’s policies and priorities.

This event aims to provide an accessible introduction to the municipal elections in Groningen, with a particular focus on international residents. Experts will explain:

  • How municipal elections in the Netherlands are organised
  • Who is eligible to vote and under what conditions
  • What issues and representatives are decided at the local level
  • Why participation in local democracy is relevant for internationals

The discussion will help participants understand how local decision-making affects everyday life in Groningen, including housing, mobility, sustainability, and public services. No prior knowledge of Dutch politics is required.

The event is open to all interested internationals and is free of charge.

This panel offers an opportunity to become better informed about local democracy and to understand the role international residents can play in the city they live in.

This event is co-organised by the Rudolf Agricola School’s Democracy & Governance theme and hosted by USVA.
