Submitting your dataset for review and publication

Before your dataset can be published in DataverseNL, it must first be reviewed by a data curator. This review helps ensure that your dataset and its metadata meet the requirements for publication and comply with the FAIR principles. It is not a scientific or content review, but a quality check of the dataset and its documentation. 

Submit your dataset for review

Once you have uploaded your data, filled in the metadata template, and your dataset is ready to be published, submit it for a Review to publish. 

The data curators of the DCC will review your dataset to ensure it meets the FAIR principles and privacy and data protection requirements. This process also takes into account human understandability, as well as technical requirements by data catalogues (ensuring proper machine readability).

The review includes checks on:

• Metadata (information about the dataset)
• File formats used 
• File organization and the structure of the dataset 
• Whether additional measures are required (e.g. to protect participants' privacy or third-party rights) 

• License and terms of access & reuse

If any information is missing or unclear, the data curator will get in touch with you by email with suggestions for changes or additions. When all requirements have been met, the data curator will publish your dataset in DataverseNL.

Please note that the data curators do not check the content of the data files. Responsibility for the dataset content remains with the researcher. 

After dataset publication

Once a dataset has been published, its metadata cannot be unpublished.  DataverseNL facilitates versioning, which means that it allows for modifications (e.g. including additional information or files). This will generate a new draft version of your dataset that will go through the same review process before publication. 

Automatically, DataverseNL will generate a new version. Each published update receives a new version number, while the persistent identifier (DOI) remains the same. This ensures that earlier versions remain citable while users can also access the latest version.

Private URL for peer review

During the peer review process of your publication, you may need to share your data with the publisher before your dataset is publicly available. In this case, you can request a temporary private URL  from your DCC data curator. This allows reviewers to access the dataset without making it publicly available in DataverseNL.
