Publishing data in DataverseNL
Do you want to publish your data in DataverseNL and are wondering how? The DCC will help you through the process of setting up and publishing a dataset in the platform in only 6 steps.
Step 1: Make an account
First-time users need to create an account using their UG credentials.
Step 2: Send the DCC the required information
Contact the DCC with the following information:
-
Affiliation, faculty or institute you work at
-
Title of your dataset
-
Description of the data and research project
-
Estimated size of your dataset in GB and number of files
-
Expected date of publication
Step 3: The DCC provides you with a dataset
The DCC will set up a dataset in the Dataverse of your faculty or institute, and give you access rights to work on your dataset. The dataset will be assigned a persistent identifier (DOI) that can be used in your publication or any other communication about the dataset. The DOI will become active once the dataset has been published.
Step 4: Prepare your dataset
Once your dataset has been set up, you need to add information (metadata) and upload files. Find all the relevant options on the menu option "Edit Dataset". The "Metadata" option will open a template of metadata items. Some of these items are mandatory to fill out, others are very useful (e.g. keywords). Some may not apply to your dataset and can be left unanswered.
It is possible to upload files up to 8GB in size. When the dataset is ready for publication, submit it for a "Review to publish".
Step 5: Review of the dataset
The DCC will take a look at your dataset and check whether it meets the FAIR principles on:
-
Metadata: Whether there is enough information so that the dataset can be found and visitors can assess if they want to look further into it (e.g. for reuse).
-
Data files: Which file formats have been used, and whether there is a logical structure when many files are involved.
-
Data protection: Whether there are any personal or sensitive data left in the dataset, and which type of protection would be appropriate. The DCC will assist you with formulating the terms of access and terms of use that fit restricted access, if applicable.
If something is missing or unclear, the DCC will get in touch with you about the aspects to reconsider, add, or change.
Step 6: Publication of the dataset
When everything is reviewed and ready, the DCC will publish the dataset for you and the DOI will become active. The metadata of the dataset (not the files) will also be registered in Pure by the University Library. It is advisable to check the information on your publications and activities in Pure on a regular basis.
