IT Security
What is IT Security?
In the digital world, the terms IT security, also known as computer security or cyber security, refer to different measures that can be applied to protect, for example, electronic devices (PCs, cell phones, etc.) and networks from malicious interventions.
The measures taken aim to prevent common vectors of attack to safeguard against unauthorized information disclosure, theft and/or damage of hardware/software/data, as well as disruption of services.
In a secure IT environment, systems are actively monitored for possible vulnerabilities and these are fixed as soon as possible.
IT Security at the UG
Different measures are taken at the UG to improve IT security and to generate a safe work environment for its members. One way to achieve this is by constantly monitoring the network traffic for possible attacks as well as suspicious activities on the UG-provided computers for early detection of possible attacks followed by an appropriate response. Furthermore, the use of multi-factor authentication (MFA) for the login to UG services safeguards IT security.
Improve your IT Security
For end-users, here are some general tips on how to improve your own IT security:
-
Choose a strong password and do not share it freely with other parties.
-
Do not use the same credentials (username + password) for different sides/services. Instead, consider using a password manager to manage your different username/password combinations.
-
Use MFA which provides an additional layer of protection against attacks.
-
Especially if you have to store or share sensitive data, just use the minimal data that is needed for the purpose.
-
Do not download and run executables from untrusted sources.
-
Run programs and other tasks with the least privileges that are needed. For example, run a program first as a normal user before trying to run it with administrator privileges on your system.
-
If on a public network, for example, Wi-Fi in a café, use a VPN.
-
Lock your device when leaving it alone.
-
Keep your device up-to-date with the latest security updates.
-
Store your data in encrypted storage spaces.
-
Use encrypted communication channels whenever possible.
-
Never send sensitive data (e.g. passwords, but also other personal information) via a non-encrypted communication channel.
