Energy Innovation Atlas: a source of inspiration for practitioners in the energy sector

This month the Energy Innovation Atlas (EIA) has been launched. The EIA serves as a platform that maps innovations in the transitioning energy sector and so it might help societies deal with the many challenges in attaining sustainable energy supply. The platform consists of case reports and video summaries created by students over the course of a master class on the ‘Energy Transition & Innovation’. The Centre for Energy Economics Research (CEER) of the University of Groningen contributed to the development of this unique instrument. 

What is the EIA?
It is both an instructive tool for students and a repository of information for the interested public. It collects innovative ideas to support the Energy Transition that have been critically analyzed by student teams. The EIA offers short reports on concrete innovations and projects currently under way in the energy sector worldwide. These reports include scientifically-informed assessments on the potential of these energy-related innovations, key insights on their respective strengths, recommendations on how to deal with anticipated challenges, and some more general lessons for similar innovative ideas. Practitioners from the energy sector can consult the student reports and summary videos to learn more about various initiatives in the Energy Transition that are happening in the Netherlands and beyond.

What’s in it for me?
The EIA is useful for anyone who is interested in current and future innovations in the energy sector and for professionals working in the field in particular. The insights the student teams generate can be transferred to other similar innovations and technologies. You might learn more about problems in making innovations successful, particularly in the energy sector, and can benefit from a fresh look on the most exciting developments in the Energy Transition. 

Feasible innovations in Energy Transition
The EIA starts mapping promising innovative ideas that could support the growth of renewable energies or climate friendly technologies. These may form some important puzzle pieces for a carbon-neutral energy sector of the future. As with all innovations, however, many of them unfortunately fail. In their reports, student teams critically assess the potential for the innovation they identified, to scale and spread. Students focus on 1) innovations that can help commercialize more efficient and sustainable energy technologies 2) innovative organizing models to overcome business barriers and coordination challenges 3) innovative financing tools to help boost sustainable energy construction and 4) innovative policy instruments designed to influence and guide the Energy Transition. They thus develop insights into the feasibility of that particular innovation and how it might contribute to making the Energy Transition a success. 

Examples: ‘H2Fuel Systems’ and ‘From Coffee to Energy’
The case reports and video summaries are created by student teams over the course of a master class on the ‘Energy Transition & Innovation’. This year’s winning team of the Best Case Analysis Award for instance, investigated an innovative initiative called ‘H2Fuel Systems’. The innovation is aimed at creating a safe and efficient means of converting renewable energy into hydrogen which can then be used in powering cars for instance. The novel idea here is to convert hydrogen into powder which makes it easier and safer to store and transport. While the technology has much potential, the student team also unearthed many challenges and potential barriers to its commercialization, such as adoption barriers due to the existing energy infrastructure. Another example of a report with an international focus is about an innovation named ‘Bio-Bean’. The core idea is to use coffee waste to produce energy in different forms. While, a startup following this idea currently only processes 10% of coffee waste in the UK, the students elaborated on the potential of this energy innovation by exploring how to increase the processing volume. Therefore, these case reports offer insights for anyone who wants to learn more about this important and rapidly changing energy sector.

Presentatie van de Energy Innovation Atlas
Een bron van inspiratie voor professionals in de energiesector

Onlangs is de Energy Innovation Atlas (EIA) gepresenteerd. De EIA is een platform voor innovaties op het gebied van de energietransitie en ondersteunt organisaties bij de vele uitdagingen die moeten worden overwonnen om tot duurzame energievoorziening te komen. Het platform bevat onderzoeksverslagen en korte filmpjes die studenten hebben gemaakt tijdens een masterclass over innovaties in de energietransitie. Het Centre for Energy Economics Research (CEER) van de Universiteit van Groningen heeft een bijdrage geleverd aan de totstandkoming van dit unieke platform.

Wat is de EIA?
De EIA is zowel een leerzaam medium voor studenten als een schatkamer van informatie voor een geïnteresseerd publiek. Ten behoeve van de energietransitie wordt op dit platform informatie verzameld die kritisch is bekeken door teams van studenten. De EIA biedt beknopte verslagen over concrete innovaties en projecten die momenteel wereldwijd in de energiesector worden uitgevoerd. Het zijn wetenschappelijk onderbouwde rapportages over het potentieel van innovaties op energiegebied, met belangrijke inzichten over de impact hiervan, en aanbevelingen over hoe omgegaan kan worden met te verwachten uitdagingen en een aantal algemenere lessen voor soortgelijke innovatieve ideeën. Professionals in de energiesector kunnen de verslagen en korte filmpjes raadplegen om meer te weten te komen over de verschillende initiatieven die op het gebied van de energietransitie in Nederland en daarbuiten plaatsvinden.

Wat heb ik eraan?
De EIA is nuttig voor iedereen die geïnteresseerd is in huidige en toekomstige innovaties in de energiesector, in het bijzonder voor professionals die in deze sector werken. De inzichten die de studententeams genereren, kunnen ook worden toegepast op andere, soortgelijke innovaties en technologieën. De EIA bevat ook meer informatie over wat het lastig maakt om innovaties, met name in de energiesector, succesvol te laten zijn. Een frisse blik op de interessantste ontwikkelingen op het gebied van energietransitie kan helpen. 

Kansrijke innovaties in de energietransitie
De EIA brengt veelbelovende innovatieve ideeën in kaart die de uitbreiding van hernieuwbare energiesoorten en klimaatvriendelijke technologieën ondersteunen. Deze kunnen in de toekomst wel eens belangrijke puzzelstukjes voor een CO2-neutrale energiesector zijn. Maar zoals het geval is met alle innovaties, redden sommige het helaas niet. In hun verslagen geven de studententeams een kritische beoordeling op de innovatie die ze hebben bestudeerd, zodat hun beoordeling gewogen en verspreid kan worden. Studenten richten zich op 1) innovaties die efficiëntere en duurzame energietechnologieën kunnen vermarkten, 2) innovatieve organisatiemodellen die commerciële obstakels uit de weg kunnen ruimen en coördinatievraagstukken kunnen oplossen, 3) innovatieve financieringsinstrumenten die duurzame energievoorziening stimuleren, en 4) innovatieve beleidsinstrumenten die bedoeld zijn om richting te geven aan de energietransitie. Zo ontwikkelen de studenten inzicht in de haalbaarheid van de betreffende innovatie en hoe deze kan bijdragen aan het succes van de energietransitie. 

Voorbeelden: ‘H2Fuel Systems’ en ‘Van koffiedik naar energie’
Het platform bevat onderzoeksverslagen en korte filmpjes die studenten hebben gemaakt in een masterclass over de energietransitie en innovatie. Zo heeft het team dat dit jaar de Best Case Analysis Award won het innovatieve initiatief ‘H2Fuel Systems’ onderzocht. De vernieuwing richt zich op het veilig en efficiënt omzetten van hernieuwbare energie naar waterstof die vervolgens als brandstof voor auto’s kan worden gebruikt. Het baanbrekende idee is dat waterstof wordt omgezet in poedervorm waardoor het makkelijker is te transporteren en op te slaan. Hoewel deze technologie veelbelovend is, heeft het studententeam een aantal uitdagingen en mogelijke problemen voor de commerciële exploitatie ervan aan het licht gebracht, zoals gebruiksbelemmeringen veroorzaakt door de huidige energie-infrastructuur. Een ander voorbeeld van een rapport met een internationale focus gaat over een innovatie met de naam ‘Bio-Bean’. De kerngedachte is om koffiedik te gebruiken om verschillende vormen van energie op te wekken. Momenteel gebruikt een start-up die deze technologie exploiteert nog slechts 10% van alle koffieafval die in Groot-Brittannië wordt geproduceerd. De studenten hebben deze energie-innovatie uitgewerkt door te onderzoeken hoe dit volume opgehoogd kan worden. Zo bevatten deze onderzoeksverslagen inzichten aan iedereen dit meer over deze belangrijke en snel veranderende energiesector wil weten.
