Energy Logistics

Professor of Energy Logistics Evrim Ursavas is closely involved with CEnBER. Her research field is in Supply Chain Design with an emphasis on Energy and Logistics. These are both very important sectors with strong economic impacts and employment opportunities. Energy is a fundamental element of the economy with the Netherlands being an important energy hub in the Northwest European market. In the Netherlands alone a turnover of 55 billion euro annually and an employment of 813,000 people is achieved in the transport and logistics sector. With Energy Logistics research, CEnBER aims to contribute new knowledge and methods to tackle relevant problems in these area's and explore new approaches for connecting academia and society, with particular focus on the Northern Netherlands.

Below you will find some of the projects that professor Evrim Ursavas is involved in.

1) TRIĒRĒS Valley

The project's main objective is to activate the development of a hydrogen market in Greece, by demonstrating how the various pillars of hydrogen fit together and can be integrated. TRIĒRĒS Valley will not only be the first hydrogen valley in Greece, but also the first in the broader region of the Balkans. Thus, TRIĒRĒS Valley will form a tight bond from its birth with other hydrogen valleys, both mature and under development. Specifically, TRIĒRĒS Valley will have close links to the more advanced HEAVENN Valley in the Northern Netherlands. The project will facilitate information sharing between both hydrogen valleys, hereby elevating the energy market of the Balkans regions, of South Eastern Europe and the wider area of the Eastern Mediterranean.Ursavas will be leading the logistics activities in TRIĒRĒS Valley.

2) HEAVENN

H2 Energy Applications (in) Valley Environments (for) Northern Netherlands. Ursavas is the academic lead in this ambitious project to transform Northern Netherlands into a hub of green hydrogen energy. The project is intended to serve as a blueprint for energy transition internationally. It examines how to build on the existing infrastructure of the gas industry to develop large-scale production of green hydrogen, an energy resource produced from renewable sources. Green hydrogen can be used to heat buildings, fuel vehicles, and in aviation. The project will see gas pipelines retrofitted to transport hydrogen, the development of storage facilities and filling stations, and the incorporation of green hydrogen in a range of uses. It is a public-private partnership that brings together a range of bodies from tlocal municipalities, to energy, real estate and transport companies, with the University of Groningen as the academic lead.

3) CONSENCUS

EU-Carbon Neutral Clusters Through Electricity-based Innovations in Capture, Utilisation and Storage. The aim of the CONSENCUS project is to innovate and collaborate on carbon capture, utilization and storage in order to allow European industries to operate with net-zero carbon emissions. This should be accomplished by offering them Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) solutions based on renewable electricity, and integrating them in carbon neutral clusters. The four-year project studies how shared infrastructure, jobs, communities, economy and environment can be positively affected by CCUS activities in two European clusters: one in northwest Europe (Netherlands, UK and Denmark) and one in the southeast Europe (Greece, Bulgaria and Romania). The different components ( capture, utilisation, transport and storage ) among the CCUS value chain, will be analyzed as a whole, considering the interactions and interdependencies among them. Models will be developed for the optimal design and operation of a CO2 cluster to minimize the total cost of the value chain by considering emission sources, capture facilities, pipelines, intermediate sites and CO2 utilization and storage sites quantitatively.

4) Smart generation planning under renewable integration in energy networks

The main goal of this project is to model and find an optimal solution of expansion problem for the electrical network with high share of renewable sources, considering long-term investment costs and short-term practical operational constraints.
