The Japanese language courses of the University of Groningen Language Centre will introduce students to the Japanese language or build on knowledge and skills already present. The courses focus mainly on speaking and understanding Japanese. Grammar is not a goal in itself, but is used to support the language acquisition.

Language of Instruction

The target language is the language of instruction as much as possible. When necessary, the Japanese course is taught in Dutch or English (depending on the group composition). The course material is in English.

Level 0>A1 is for participants who do not speak Japanese at all, as well as those who want to refresh their basic knowledge of the language. In this course, Japanese kana characters (hiragana and katakana, about 100 characters) will be introduced.

Study load

24 contact hours, in addition a total of around 30 hours of self-study.

Level A1>A1/A2 is for participants who have followed the 0>A1 course or have a similar level. In the course A1>A1/A2, only Japanese characters will be used. This means you must be able to read kana if you are planning to join the A1>A1/A2 course. You do not have to be able to write kana characters.

Office Hour

If you want to register and you have not previously taken a Japanese course at the Language Centre, we advise you to visit the office hour to discuss with a teacher which course would suit you best, but this is not mandatory. Please note that you can already register for the course you are interested in.

Office hours only take place in the period before the start of the course. If office hours are scheduled, you can make your appointment here.

This course is intended for those who have taken the level A1 > A1/A2 Japanese course at the Language Centre or who have reached a comparable level of proficiency. In the course A1/A2 > A2, only Japanese characters are used. Participants should then be able to read these characters. This means that participants must be able to read kana characters if they want to participate in the A1/A2 > A2 course. Being able to write Kana characters is not necessary, but it is useful if you can type Japanese on your computer.
