The Italian language courses of the University of Groningen Language Centre focus mainly on speaking and understanding Italian. More attention will be paid to reading and writing skills from level 2 onwards. We also offer Italian conversation courses where the focus is entirely on learning to speak the language better.

Grammar is not a goal in itself in our Italian language courses, but will be used to support the language acquisition.

Language of Instruction               

The target language is the language of instruction as much as possible. When necessary, the course is taught in English.

This course is for participants who speak little or no Italian.

Study load

24 contact hours, in addition a total of around 30 hours of self-study.

You will also be using online course material in Brightspace, the online learning environment of the University of Groningen.

This course is for participants who can speak and understand some Italian and can get by in a simple conversation about everyday topics if the other party helps them.

Study load

24 contact hours, in addition a total of around 30 hours of self-study.

Office Hour

If you want to register and you have not previously taken an Italian course at the Language Centre, we advise you to visit the office hour to discuss with a teacher which course would suit you best, but this is not mandatory. Please note that you can already register for the course you are interested in.

Office hours only take place in the period before the start of the course. If office hours are scheduled, you can make your appointment here.

You can also determine your starting level of a language training online and in your own time with the placement test. This test gives a global indication of your level for your own reference, for a more personal advice visit our office hour.

This course is intended for participants at CEFR level A2: you speak a little bit of Italian and have a limited vocabulary and knowledge of grammar. The course is aimed at anyone who wants to reach a basic level in reading, listening, writing and speaking in Italian.

Prendiamo un caffè e pratichiamo la lingua!

Do you already know a bit of Italian and would you like to practice your speaking skills before you move up to the next level? Whether you want to talk more easily about yourself, discuss something with your friends, or master the language for study or work at a beginner's level, an Italian conversation course offers the solution!

During the course, we work together to improve your speaking skills. During the six lessons you will work practically with the language through various exercises such as role plays, language games, theme cards and question-and-answer exercises. We will work with various conversation topics such as planning a holiday, booking a hotel and discussing your work or study. In this way, you expand your vocabulary and repeat, practise and improve grammar knowledge that you have already studied.

This course offers you the ideal opportunity to learn to speak Italian better together with a native speaker and your fellow course members in an accessible way!

Your level

You can join the course at a beginner's level of Italian A1 or a basic level of Italian A2. You can introduce yourself to others, ask and answer questions about personal details. Moreover, you are able to communicate on simple and everyday issues. You already understand a little Italian but want to be able to put your basic knowledge into practice better. During the course, mainly Italian is spoken.

If you are not sure of your level, you can easily test your language level online using the placement test! You can also make an appointment for the office hour to get personal advice. Office hours only take place in the period before the start of the course. If office hours are scheduled, you can make your appointment here.

Study load

6 lessons of 1,5 hour each, plus 18 hours of self-study.

Course materials

For this course we use new material that will be provided by the teacher. The conversation course partly refers back to the course material of Italian 0 > A1 and Italian A1 > A2.

You will also be using online course material in Brightspace, the online learning environment of the University of Groningen.

Minimum number of participants: 8

Maximum number of participants: 16

Attendance certificate

At the end of a course, every participant will receive an attendance certificate on condition that they have attended 75% of the lessons.

Would you like to speak more Italian before you move up to the next level, or is your fluency not yet adequate enough? Whether you would like to have an easier conversation with your in-laws, or better master the language for study or work, a conversation course in Italian offers the solution!

You can join the course at a good basic level of Italian A2 or at a semi-advanced level of Italian A2/B1. You are be able to conduct simple dialogues and exchange direct information on familiar topics and activities. Even if your level is slightly higher than the basic level, this course is suitable for you. You already understand Italian and can cope with everyday situations, but you would like to be able to communicate spontaneously with native speakers.

Rosetta Stone

Use a Rosetta Stone account for online independent study besides one of our language courses, to keep working on your language skills during and after the course. This is not compulsory for our language courses and will not be used by the teacher.
