Standard English Group Courses

During the English General Language Skills courses of the University of Groningen Language Centre, attention will be on speaking, writing, reading and listening with some focuses on vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.

These courses are for general skills and are not intended to be preparation courses for any formal English tests. For the test preparation courses, see this page.


Virtual classroom

These courses will be taught as an online interactive group course via Blackboard Collaborate; our online classroom for the coming period! One lesson lasts 90 minutes. Per lesson you should count on 2-3 hours of self-study. Read here about everything you can expect from an online language course.


Schedule and registration

A1/A2 > A2 - elementary

Duration: 7 of 13 weeks
Study load: 18 contact hours and 30 hours of independent study

The English A1/A2>A2 course is a course at elementary level. The course is intended for participants who have at least gone through all of the Duolingo English exercises or equivalent and who are able to communicate the basics in English. You understand about 20% of the content of TV programmes. (CEFR level A1/A2 reading, listening and conversation).

Your Level: Mandatory Office Hour

It is important that you enroll in an English course at the right level so that you feel challenged to learn more but also feel comfortable with the level. Therefore, we require that you go to the English office hours during which your language levels will be briefly assessed. The intake instructor will then give you an advice. With this advice you can enrol in a course at the advised level.

When should I go to the office hours?

  • If you have not ever taken a Language Centre English course.

Who should not go to the office hours?

  • If you have already taken a Language Centre English course, you can register using the advice the teacher gave you at the end of the course.

Course Material   

The course material is not included in the course fee and is not available at the Language Centre.

  • New Language Leader - Elementary (coursebook + MyEnglishLab access)

  • The book, New Language Leader, and its online counterpart My English Lab, are both required. Together, they aid students in developing their English skills in speaking, writing, reading, and listening, as well as vocabulary and grammar. The subscription to the online lab is valid for almost two years, so students can continue to improve their English skills even after the General English Skills course is completed.

Nestor/Google

You will also be using online course material in Nestor, the blackboard learning environment of the University of Groningen, as well as Google Drive and Google Docs, for which you will need a student RUG mail account or a Gmail account.

Using a Rosetta Stone account besides a language course

It is possible to use a Rosetta Stone account for online independent study besides one of our language courses, with the advantage that the account can be used after the course to keep working on your language skills. Please note that a Rosetta Stone account is not compulsory for our language courses and will not be used by the teacher.

Attendance Certificate

At the end of the course, every participant will receive an attendance certificate on condition that they have attended 75% of the lessons.

A2 > A2/B1 - elementary

The course is intended for participants who are able to understand and use phrases and high-frequency vocabulary of familiar subjects (family, work, shopping, etc.) and understand most of the main points of TV programs if delivery is relatively short, slow and clear (CEFR level A2/B1 reading, listening and conversation).

The English B2/C1 > C1 course is a course at advanced level. The course is intended for participants who are able to follow most extended lectures and familiar discussions and who can understand literary prose and many TV programs and films without too much effort(CEFR level B2 Conversation; CEFR level C1 reading and listening).

Your Level: Mandatory Office Hour

The English C1 > C1 and above course is a course at advanced level. The course is intended for participants who understand extended speech even when not clearly structured and can understand unrelated, specialized articles. You can express yourself spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions (CEFR level C1 speaking, writing, and listening).
