Standard English group courses

During the English General Language Skills courses of the University of Groningen Language Centre, attention will be on speaking, writing, reading and listening with some focuses on vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.

These courses are for general skills and are not intended to be preparation courses for any formal English tests. For the test preparation courses, see this page.


Schedule and registration

Intermediate B2 > B2/C1 - start: 14 August

Duration:
2 weeks (intensive) or 6 or 12 weeks (regular)
Study load:
18 contact hours (online) or 24 contact hours (in-person) and 30 hours of independent study

The English B2 > B2/C1 course is a course at intermediate level. The course is intended for participants who are able to follow some extended lectures and familiar discussions and who can follow most news and current affairs programs (CEFR level B2 reading, listening and conversation).

Office Hour

If you want to register and you have not previously taken an English course at the Language Centre, we advise you to visit the  office hour  to discuss with a teacher which course would suit you best, but this is not mandatory. Please note that you can already register for the course you are interested in.

You can also determine your starting level of a language training online and in your own time with the  placement test. This test gives a global indication of your level for your own reference, for a more personal advice visit our office hour.

Course Material   

There is no book requested for this course. Course material will be provided during the lessons.

Brightspace/Google

You will also be using online course material in Brightspace, the online learning environment of the University of Groningen, as well as Google Drive and Google Docs, for which you will need a student RUG mail account or a Gmail account.

Using a Rosetta Stone account besides a language course

It is possible to use a Rosetta Stone account for online independent study besides one of our language courses, with the advantage that the account can be used after the course to keep working on your language skills. Please note that a Rosetta Stone account is not compulsory for our language courses and will not be used by the teacher.

Attendance Certificate

At the end of the course, every participant will receive an attendance certificate on condition that they have attended 75% of the lessons.

The English B2/C1 > C1 course is a course at advanced level. The course is intended for participants who are able to follow most extended lectures and familiar discussions and who can understand literary prose and many TV programs and films without too much effort(CEFR level B2 Conversation; CEFR level C1 reading and listening).

Please note that you can already register for the course you are interested in.

The English C1 > C1 and above course is a course at advanced level. The course is intended for participants who understand extended speech even when not clearly structured and can understand unrelated, specialized articles. You can express yourself spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions (CEFR level C1 speaking, writing, and listening).

If you want to register and you have not previously taken an English course at the Language Centre, we advise you to visit the office hour to discuss with a teacher which course would suit you best, but this is not mandatory. Please note that you can already register for the course you are interested in.
