What's the difference between the TOEFL, Cambridge, and IELTS?

There are various English proficiency exams and all vary slightly. These are the main differences between the TOEFL test, Cambridge, and IETLS.

TOEFL

  • Primarily American English
  • Computed-based
  • Primarily for academic purposes
  • US universities may prefer a TOEFL score
  • The certificate is valid for two years after the test date

Cambridge

  • Primarily British English
  • Face-to-face interviews
  • You may choose between a paper- or computer-based exam
  • For Academic and General purposes
  • The certificate is valid forever

IELTS

  • Primarily British English
  • Face-to-face interviews
  • You may choose between a paper- or computer-based exam
  • For Academic and General purposes
  • The certificate is valid for two years after the test date
  • IELTS is typically cheaper, but prices change often

I want to study abroad, how do I know which level is required?

The required language level for studying abroad may vary across different universities, but most often the required proficiency level is C1.

Language assessments university staff

The Testing Unit of the University of Groningen Language Centre assesses the language proficiency levels of university staff (both teaching and non-teaching staff) on a regular basis.
