Privacy & Data Protection

Research projects often involve human subjects. With the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in 2018, researchers must build compliance with the GDPR into their research plan.

Data protection is not just about security. The GDPR emphasizes the importance of transparency as well as the freedoms and rights of research participants.

In this section, you can find more information about the meaning of GDPR in research, some examples of high-risk research scenarios, necessary data protection measures, the relation between GDPR and ethics and information about ethics procedures in funding applications.

DCC data protection services

The DCC offers help with:

  • identifying privacy risks in research projects, for example by making a data flow diagram;
  • selecting and applying appropriate technical and organizational measures so researchers can handle their data with care;
  • Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIA) in case research is likely to result in a high risk to the rights and freedoms of research subjects.
