Standard UG Workspaces
The University of Groningen provides different computing environments, commonly referred to as workplaces. These standard workplaces are available in two main types: Windows-based workplaces and Linux-based workplaces (LWP).
Windows-based workplaces
There are several Windows-based workplaces:

The choice between these depends on your needs:

If you often need to install specific software yourself, choose a User Managed Workplace (UFC).

If you mainly use standard UG software, a University Workplace (UWP) or Virtual Workplace (VWP) is a better choice. Note that software available on the UWP is not always available on the VWP, so please verify whether your required software is installed in the virtual environment.

If you work with sensitive data or need a secure collaborative environment, the Virtual Research Workspace (VRW) is specifically designed for that because it is a closed system to the outside.
Linux-based workplaces
For users who prefer Linux, the Linux Workplace (LWP) is available. This is provided both as a physical installation on local workstations and as a virtual environment:
