The fourth edition of the Gerrit Krol Award was awarded to Lizayra Dassen for her essay titled Een uitdagende onwetendheid (A challenging ignorance). The jury described her essay as ‘convincing’ and ‘well thought-out’.

Will you write the best essay in Dutch on the theme ‘AI and culture’? Then you are the winner of the Gerrit Krol Award 2025! The Language Centre and the Dutch Language and Culture programme of the University of Groningen are organising this fourth edition of the Gerrit Krol Award. Students from all universities and universities of applied sciences in the Dutch language area can participate.

The DAD is organized by the University of Groningen in partnership with the Institute for Developing Across Differences (IDD).

At the Writing Centre, University of Groningen students can receive free writing coaching. Our coaches will ask you questions and help you to look at your text or writing process from a different angle. The goal is for you to rediscover the joy of writing and to have a starting point for writing better academic texts.

The free Dutch Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) by the University of Groningen Language Centre has reached an impressive milestone: 300,000 participants worldwide have learned the basics of the Dutch language through this course. What once started as an initiative to familiarize future University of Groningen (UG) students and staff with Dutch has grown into an international success.
