Plannen voor de toekomst: "Ik hoop mijn MSc af te ronden in januari 2021. Neem daarna een kleine pauze en ga op zoek naar nieuwe kansen."

Waarom deed je mee aan de Odyssee? "Mijn studievereniging (VESTING) benaderde mij om deel te nemen aan de Odyssey Hackathon. Het idee om bij te dragen aan het oplossen van grote maatschappelijke problemen vond ik erg aantrekkelijk."

Wat vond je er leuk aan? "Alle mensen die bij onze challenge betrokken waren. Het enthousiasme en de betrokkenheid van alle belanghebbenden, van capaciteitsplanners tot ED-artsen (Emergency Departement), was erg motiverend. Zelfs tijdens deze COVID-19-tijden waarin alle gezondheidsmedewerkers het extreem druk hadden, waren ze bereid om een ​​stapje extra voor ons te doen."

Wat vond je niet leuk? "De fysieke tol van het doen van een Hackathon / Momentum. Mensen zullen verrast zijn wat de effecten van 48 uur continu werken aan één project zijn (uiteraard met kleine rustpauzes)."

Hoe hebben jullie allemaal de energie behouden na vertragingen door corona? "Dit was soms best moeilijk. De eerste keer dat we als team samenkwamen was begin 2020. Wat me echt op de been hield, en ik blijf het herhalen, waren alle belanghebbenden die we in deze periode hebben gesproken. Ze geloofden echt dat we een verschil konden maken en waardeerden onze inbreng."

Wat voor soort oplossing heeft het team bedacht? "We hebben een heleboel oplossingen bedacht. Zelfs het veranderen van ons belangrijkste focuspunt met nog maar 16 uur te gaan. De uiteindelijke oplossing die we presenteerden is een idee dat is ontleend aan onderhoudsplanning van machines. Door de achteruitgang van chronische patiënten nauwlettend in de gaten te houden, konden we betere voorspelling doen wanneer zo'n patiënt het risico loopt om naar de ED te gaan. Dan kunnen we, door te interfereren met de beste metingen, deze patiënt hopelijk een reis naar de ED besparen. Vooral ouderen komen erger terug van de ED dan dat ze naar binnen gingen . "

Wat was er goed aan uw presentatie en wat kan er beter? "Natuurlijk had veel beter kunnen gaan, maar dat is volgens mij een integraal onderdeel van een Hackathon. Als je een oplossing binnen een paar uur samenstelt, zal niets perfect zijn. Ik ben echt trots op de teaminspanning die we in de presentatie hebben gestopt."

Zou je studenten aanraden om deel te nemen aan de Odyssee? "Zeker, iedereen zou het zelf moeten ervaren. Je moet wel bereid zijn om voor en tijdens de Hackathon hard aan het probleem te werken."

Wat heb je geleerd tijdens de odyssee? En wat heb je gemist? "Allereerst heb ik veel nieuwe kennis opgedaan over het Nederlandse zorgstelsel. Dat er bijvoorbeeld nog veel per fax wordt gecommuniceerd. Ik heb de fysieke gebeurtenis gemist. Ik denk dat als je fysiek samen bent in één gebouw het werken aan het onderwerp nog meer energie geeft. "

Why did you join the odyssey? "My study association (VESTING) approached me to participate in the Odyssey Hackathon. I really found the idea of contributing in solving major societal problems very appealing."

What did you like about it? "All the people involved in our challenge. The enthusiasm and involvement of all stakeholders, from capacity planners to ED (Emergency Departement) doctors, was really motivating. Even during these COVID-19 times in which all health staff is extremely busy they were willing to go the extra mile for us."

What didn’t you like? "The physical toll of doing a Hackathon/Momentum. People will be surprised by the effects of working constantly on one project for 48 hours (of course with small rest breaks)."

How did you all keep the energy after delays because of corona? "This was acctually quite difficult at times. The first time we got together as a team was in the beginning of 2020. What really pulled me through, and I am going to repeat myself, were all the stakeholders we spoke to during this time period. They really believed we could make a difference and valued our input."

What kind of solution did your team come up with? "We came up with a ton of solutions. Even switching our main focal point with only 16 hours to go. The final solution we presented is an idea borrowed from maintenance planning of machines. By closely monitoring the deteriorating of chronic patients, we could make better prediction on when such a patient is at risk of going to the ED. Then, with interfering with the best measurements we could hopefully save this patient a trip to the ED. Especially elderly people come back from the ED worse than that they went in."

What was good of your presentation and what could be better? "Of course a lot could have gone better, but that is integral to a Hackathon I believe. When putting a solution together in a few hours nothing will be perfect. I am really proud on the team effort we put into the presentation."

Would you recommend students to participate in the odyssey? "Definitely, everybody should experience this themselves. You should however be prepared to work hard on the problem before and during the Hackathon."

What did you learn in the odyssey? And what did you miss? "First of all, I gained a lot of new knowledge on the Dutch health care system. For example, that a lot of communication is still done by fax. I missed the physical event, I think that when you are physically together in one building working on the topic becomes even more energizing."
