I would like to test my level of English

As an official TOEFL test centre, we administer the TOEFL iBT® Test every two weeks at the Harmony Building in Groningen. We also regularly run a TOEFL exam preparation course, which offers you a preview of the test format, helps improve your English skills and tells you more about the scoring system.

Other commonly used tests to assess English language proficiency are Cambridge and IELTS. We do not administer these tests at the Language Centre. If you’re interested in taking either of these tests, please refer to their official websites below.

We assess the language proficiency levels of university staff (both teaching and non-teaching staff) on a regular basis. For more information, please follow the link below.

There are various English proficiency exams and they all vary slightly. The main differences between the TOEFL test, Cambridge, and IETLS are as follows:

TOEFL

• Primarily American English

• Computer-based

• Primarily for academic purposes

• US universities may prefer a TOEFL score

• The certificate is valid for two years from the test date

Cambridge

• Primarily British English

• Face-to-face interviews

• You may choose between a paper- or computer-based exam

• For both academic and general purposes

• The certificate is valid indefinitely

IELTS

• Primarily British English

• Face-to-face interviews

• You may choose between a paper- or computer-based exam

• For both academic and general purposes

• Results are available within 13 days

• The certificate is valid for two years from the test date

• IELTS is typically cheaper, but prices change often

The required language level for studying abroad may vary across different universities, but most often the required proficiency level is C1.
