Provenance and acquisition

Biography

The books in this collection were owned by Hermannus Johannes Josephus (Herman) Sips, the first owner of the Sips painting company in Groningen. Herman Sips was born in 1879 and joined the painting company J.H de Vries at the age of 12. Fourteen years later, Sips took over the business and advertised himself as a house, carriage and decoration painter. Around 1900, Sips also studied at the Academy Minerva. 

The exact circumstances and timing of how Herman Sips acquired the books in this collection is unknown. The book collection was discovered in the estate of the mother of son Herman Sips (biology alumnus 1983). There, his sisters found books and other materials that had belonged to grandfather Herman Sips. In 2017, the books were donated to the UB by the Sips family.

The pieces in this collection were collected by Herman Sips (1879-1966) and donated to the UB by the Sips family in 2017.

Contents and collation

The collection mainly consists of sample books for decorative painters. It comprises twenty-four books, primarily from the nineteenth century. In addition, the book collection also contains five folders with miscellaneous material.s
