Biography

De Vries was a Dutch poet and painter. He was born as the second son of Frouwktje Opten and Wobbe de Vries. Wobbe worked as a linguist and teacher. De Vries’ youth was not a happy one. Between 1918 and 1947, de Vries worked for the municipal archives of Groningen. He had been publishing poetry from a young age. His poems were published in the literary periodical Het Getij, among other places. As an artist, De Vries was an early member of the surrealist movement. His work expressed his anti-bourgeois attitude and his focus on vitality. The subconscious is another important theme within his poetry. De Vries was often inspired by Spanish culture, so much so that he wrote some poems in Spanish as well.

On the occasion of De Vries’ fiftieth birthday, Groningen city council began awarding the Hendrik de Vriesprijs, a bi-annual award for literary achievements. The award was discontinued in 2011. In 1986, the city council also created the Hendrik de Vriesstipendium, a bursary to support young artistic talent.

Besides his work as a poet, De Vries was also a talented painter.
