Biography

Dirk Verèl was born 27 June 1892 in The Hague. Verèl began his career as a teacher in Haarlem, where he also directed a local choir. In 1921, he wrote his first play entitled Herodes. A year later, he became a teacher of Dutch at the ‘Kweekschool met den Bijbel’ in Groningen. He kept writing plays and was also an editor for literary periodicals Het Venster and De litteraire Revue. Furthermore, Verèl harnessed his artistic prowess to paint and make prints. Together with his wife Sophie Damen, Verèl made his home into a meeting place for young artists. Starting in 1947, Verèl was the director of the radio drama department at broadcaster NCRV in Hilversum. He held this function until his retirement. During this time, he also founded the ‘Bond van Christelijke Kunstenaars’ (alliance of Christian artists). Verèl passed away 14 august 1971 in Hilversum.

As a writer and producer of plays, Dirk Verèl was a prominent advocate for dramatic arts in reform communities. At the NCRV he built up the radio drama department, and produced more than 250 plays in Dutch.
