Biography

Cees Saal was born in Wognum, Noord-Holland. His father was an architect and worked in Alkmaar. From an early age, Saal was interested in the rural residents. After studying sociography, sociology and ethnology at the University of Amsterdam, he came to the University of Groningen. There, he wrote his dissertation on changes in the religious beliefs and lifestyles of rural families and the relation to their home and living circumstances. In 1958 Saal was awarded a doctorate with distinction under the supervision of Professor P.J. Bouman, and in 1980 he became professor of practical sociology. Saal frequently collaborated with other researchers, among them Dr. C.J. Straver. Besides his duties at the University of Groningen, he taught courses and workshops to rural women and he was an active board member for the Bladergroenschool. Shortly after his retirement in 1984, he passed away in Groningen.

A selection of published works:

  • Hoe leeft en denkt onze jeugd (Den Haag, 1951)
  • Het boerengezin in Nederland. Sociologische grondslagen (dissertation, Assen, 1958)
  • Samenleven in Meervoud. Juridische en sociologische aspecten van het samenwonen zonder huwelijk (Baarn, 1981)
