Provenance and acquisition

Biography

Johan Hendrik Petrie (1943-2004) was a Dutch historian, best known for the dissertation that he wrote at the University of Groningen. In this work, titled Lodewijk XVII-Naundorff, een mysterie ontrafeld, he concludes that Karl Wilhelm Naundorff, who spent the years after the French Revolution claiming to be king Louis XVII of France, was in fact an imposter.

In the early 2000s he was commissioned by the municipality Assen to research ‘het geheim van Vredeveld’ (‘the secret of Vredeveld’). The lady of the house, Louise Aubry d’Arancey, was said to be a daughter of King Louis Bonaparte. This research was finished and published in 2005.
