Biography

Willem Frederik Hermans (1921-1995) was a Dutch literary author, who wrote in several different genres. Furthermore, he was a photographer and held a doctorate in physical geography. In 1952, he started working at the University of Groningen as an assistant to Professor H.J. Keuning. Hermans gave lectures on cartography, meteorology and climatology. Five years later his responsibilities grew to include soil science and geomorphology. During his time at the University of Groningen, Hermans was often unhappy with the working conditions and thought his faculty was working against him. He did not get his preferred laboratory and was only given first-year students to teach. He was not given opportunities to do field work or practical research. In 1955 he received his doctorate in physics and mathematics from the University of Amsterdam with a dissertation on the geomorphological features of Luxembourg.
