Biography

 Rudolph Pabus Cleveringa Pzn., born 27 July 1887 in Leek, was a member of a prominent Groningen family. He studied law at the University of Groningen, obtaining his degree in 1912. After graduating, Cleveringa worked several jobs. He was a lawyer in Middelburg, a substitute judge in Groningen and   eventually became the director of the law courts in Leeuwarden. Besides his career as a lawyer,  Cleveringa also wrote extensively about the history of law. His main area of interest was late medieval Frisian and Groningen law. He was also a member of the state committee on ‘beklemrecht’ (leasehold), which was led by Dr Beekhuis. Furthermore, Cleveringa was an honourary member of the Pro Excolendo Iure Patrio legal society, he fulfilled several roles on the board of the Fries Genootschap (Frisian Society) and he was a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences (KNAW). Cleveringa poassed away 11 january 1972 in Noordburgum, aged 84.

Letters that had already been bundled and been used for note-taking have been preserved the way they were found. For a complete inventory at item level, more time is required.
