Access and library card

The UB City Centre has access gates. Are you a University of Groningen student or employee, do you study at Hanzehogeschool, or do you have a library card? Then you can access the library with your student card, University of Groningen card or library card.* If you do not have a card, please report to the desk at the entrance.

*Please note: during the UG-only period, only University of Groningen students and staff have access to the UB.

The University Library welcomes the diverse target groups that can access the University Library:

UG-students
Students can use their University student card as a library card to borrow and access books. Your library card number is the bar code number on the back of the University student card. The student card is used for:

Students Hanzehogeschool
Please note: besides UG-students, students of the Hanzehogeschool are also welcome at the UB. However, in the so-called UG-only periods the UB City Centre is accessible for students and staff of the University of Groningen only, see: Exam periods: UG-only. If you would like to borrow materials, you can purchase a subscription at a reduced price.
Other students
Students of other Dutch universities, affiliated with UNL are entitled to a free library card.

UG staff have a personal University card. The University card can be used to borrow books from all UG libraries. The University card can also be used for interlibrary loans.

If your are leaving the RUG due to retirement you have the option to keep your RUG account. With this, you retain access to electronic databases, journals and e-books.
Also, you can get a free library card for borrowing books from the UB. Borrowing books from other libraries is possible at the ILL rate for 'Other borrowers'
Please note: you will have to extend your account yourself every year.
Please choose: (Pre-)pension or accorded emeritus status (annually)
N.B. This only applies to former staff as mentioned above; not for staff leaving the UG for other reasons!
Other visitors (alumni, businesses, pupils and others)

Other visitors may purchase a paid membership for the University Library.
Please note: if you are a former employee, employee/student of a Dutch university or a student at HOVO, you are eligible for a free library card.

University Library subscription: €45 a year - after first year, one month's notice.

Alumni can purchase a UB subscription.

The Martini Card (valid at the UB and Forum Groningen - Public Library). Please contact the Public Library.

The business card: €100 a year (after first year, one month's notice)

Secondary school pupils: €15 a year
N.B. These subscription options do not include off-campus access to the UG’s e-resources, e-journals and e-books. Those are only accessible within the UG network. Payments are only possible with a debit card.

Work places
All study places in the UB City Centre are freely accessible, with the exception of the UG-only periods. In these weeks surrounding the exam periods you must reserve a study place in the UB City Centre upfront (you need your UG or Hanze student number for this).
