Aletta Health Grant

Why does the Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health finance grants?

Through consultancy earnings, AJSPH has reserved a budget to stimulate small and short term activities within the UMCG, UG, NHL Stenden and the Hanze UAS that are linked to the Public Health theme. The total budget for each year is: €25.000,- which will be subdivided into smaller amounts of €2.500,- maximum.

Why do we finance smaller activities?

• To assist researchers and teachers in further developing AJSPH related themes.
• To stimulate working on societal challenges and issues.
• To positively brand the UG, the Hanze UAS and the UMCG in terms of its AJSPH activities.

Ideas for small grants could be:

• (Contribution to) organising workshops and small conferences
• Outreach activities as promotion material
• A booklet to communicate research findings to societal partners
• A form of visualization of research
• Small data collections
• A team prize
• Other…

Committee

Proposals will be judged by a small standing committee. The committee consists of 5 members that are connected to AJSPH mission but are not directly involved. Each will be a member for 2 years maximum. The committee evaluates the procedure every year and will adjust the procedure if necessary. The scientific director of AJSPH is the chair of the committee and will be assisted by the program manager.

Conditions

Because of the transparency and legitimate decision-making process, we composed a set of conditions and criteria of grant eligibility.

• It fits the AJSPH themes clearly. This means that it addresses a societal health challenge. Additionally, it links clearly to the health capabilities model (Prah Ruger, J. (2010). Health capability: conceptualization and operationalization. American journal of public health, 100(1), 41-49).
• The grant explicitly invites junior researchers (PhD students, Post-Docs) to submit.
• It is interdisciplinary in nature and transcends disciplinary borders of faculties and/or institutions.
• It is preferably submitted by two or more members of the academic staff.
• The applicants are obliged to mention AJSPH in outreach activities (by for example showing AJSPH logo).

Criteria

• Everybody can only be a main applicant once per year and in the distribution of the grants we take into account spread across institutes, faculties and disciplines.
• The grant ‘makes a difference’, and cannot be financed through regular faculty-level or university level resources.
• The grant should not exceed € 2.500,- max.
• Amounts up to 500 euros are not submitted to the committee. If the application meets the criteria the decision will be made by the scientific director of AJSPH and communicated afterwards to the committee.

Procedure

• Grant applications must be submitted using the application form and template found on the AJSPH website.
• Fill out the template (which can be downloaded via the button below) completely, then upload the template as PDF in the application form.
• The committee is responsible for making the decision to approve a grant. Most votes count. In case of a draw, the final decision will be made by the chair of the committee. There are no appeals.
• Within one month AJSPH  will answer the applicants if the grant will be allocated, and with conditions.
• The grant will be transferred by using an internal project code. A description of the grant /name of the event is required for this.
• The application procedure will be closed when there are more applications than there is available funding. The total budget is divided in two tranches.

• All applicants who receive an Aletta Health Grant will be asked to submit a short report which will be used by AJSPH for communication purposes.
