Dash Webinar: Do we need better interfaces?

When working with data as researchers, we tend to treat interfaces as functional elements that provide access to our object of study. In this talk, Prof. Dr. Anne Beaulieu will explore what happens when we slow down and examine the interface as an important space of action that shapes what we do, and also how and what we know with data.

In this webinar on 5 October, you will learn more about what it means to approach interfaces as practices rather than devices (objects or technologies). These insights form the basis for the second part of the lecture, in which Beaulieu will address the follow-up questions that the title raises: Better, for what or for whom? Better, how? Interfaces have the potential to shape relationships between people, machines and more-than-humans, and to support new kinds of research, but in doing so, ambiguity, complexity, exploration and multiplicity are of immense importance.

Prof. Dr. Anne Beaulieu

Professor Anne Beaulieu holds the Aletta Jacobs Chair in Knowledge Infrastructures at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. Her research and teaching provide insights into how data are created, synthesised and transformed into evidence. She also studies how databases, platforms and data flows shape what we know and who has access to this knowledge. She has led the development of many lines of research and education, including at University College Fryslân, in the minor Data Wise: Data Science and Society, and as scientific coordinator of the PhD programme at the Netherlands Graduate Research School of Science, Technology and Modern Culture (WTMC). She recently published Data and Society: A Critical Introduction (with Sabina Leonelli).
