Aletta Global Health Launch

Many topics that we deal with in public health research are relevant in a global context. Global health is a topic in virtually every public health agenda, but what exactly is it? And how do we incorporate this perspective in our daily work?

On 2 November, we organize the Aletta Global Health Launch, with a plenary panel discussion on the various aspects of Global Health, a Global Health workshop, and Aletta Café for students from various Aletta education programs. See the details below and sign-up.

Panel discussion

The panel will provide an introduction to the concept of Global Health and what it means across the various disciplines of Aletta. In a dialogue with a range of speakers, the global health dimensions of Aletta’s rich research agenda will be explored, including the global obesity pandemic, migrant health, and access to vaccines.

Panelists

Break-out session 1: Global Health at Aletta

In this dynamic networking session, joint research interests in the field of Global Health will be identified and ideas for interdisciplinary collaboration at the AJSPH will be developed. Both content and methodology will be explored. Dialogue and collaboration are central.

Based on the identified themes and ideas the goal is to develop a collective mind map and to make plans for further meet-ups of Aletta Global Health. The session will be chaired by Brigit Toebes and Regien Biesma-Blanco.

Break-out session 2: Aletta Cafe

The Aletta Cafe is intended for students of various public health related educational programs to get to know each other, discuss current public health topics and, more generally, meet and mingle with the broader Aletta Community.

The next Cafe is organised as a break-out session in the Aletta Global Health Launch. We will discuss aspects of Global Health, and how - in our interconnected world - everything we do has a global component.

In the Cafe Session (organised for students, and open to others) - we invite you to participate in the discussion on how to curb the world-wide obesity pandemic. We will first set the scene by sketching the current situation in the Netherlands, as well as in Mexico. Mexico now has a higher percentage of people with obesity than the US. Mario Rojas Russell, professor at the School of Psychology, National Autonomous University of Mexico, will introduce the Mexican perspectives on this issue; Eva Corpeleijn, associate professor of Lifestyle Medicine, UMCG, will present the Dutch perspective. Discussions on questions such as what policy interventions have been tried in both settings and what could be potential avenues for intervening will take place.

Corona measures

In order to keep everyone safe and to comply with the governmental event restrictions, we will be checking the corona check app QR codes. We would also like to encourage everyone to wear a face mask during the event.

Note: If you are a student only coming for the Aletta Cafe session, you do not need to show a QR code.

Video and photos

During the event, there will be a video filmed and some photos being taken. Please let us know if you do not wish to be in them.
