Provenance and acquisition

Biography: Jacob Houdijn (Jaap) Beekhuis (Leiden 1903 - Driebergen 1988), son of Mr Christiaan Houdijn Beekhuis, president of the Leeuwarden Court of Appeal, and Johanna Martina Dutry van Haeften. He studied law at Leiden University from 1921 to 1925, after which he went to London on a scholarship to prepare for writing his dissertation. In 1934, he obtained his doctorate cum laude for his thesis Aansprakelijkheid van rechtspersonen en hare organen voor onrechtmatige daad.

From 1934 to 1938, he worked as a lawyer. In 1938, Beekhuis was appointed professor of civil law, civil procedure, introduction to law and agricultural law at the University of Groningen. During the occupation, Beekhuis was dean of the law faculty. After the war, he was a member of the Judicial Department of the Council for the Restoration of Rights. He was rector magnificus of the University of Groningen from 1952 to 1953. In September 1967, Beekhuis left the university and was appointed a member of the Council of State.

Beekhuis married Soetje Alta (died 1981) in 1929, with whom he had four children.
