Paul Anand

Paul Anand is Professor of Economics at the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, School of Social Sciences & Global Studies at the Open University in London and Research Associate at the Department of Social Policy and Intervention, Oxford University. His work stems from long standing interests in the foundations of decision sciences. He has gained international recognition for his work on the operationalisation of Sen’s capabilities approach to welfare economics and its use in debates about the measurement of progress. His work includes collaborations with the World Bank. See attached some relevant publications.

His presentation will be an overview of his work on capability measurement, presenting the operationalisation from Sen's original capability theory (maths) to using it empirically in (health) surveys. His work ranges from issues on women's empowerment, happiness of young children, child growth, adult health and wellbeing. He is a guest of Prof Hinke Haisma, Dept Demography.
