Microbial Biotechnology and Biocatalysis
Microbial biotechnology and biocatalysis is a strong research topic for which GBB continuously attracts funding from programmes supported by the Dutch Government and industries in view of sustainable chemistry and the biobased economy. The three major research lines at GBB focus on the derivatization and production of (peptide) antibiotics, the discovery and redesign of oxidative biocatalysis targeted on efficient synthesis of fine chemicals, and the identification, characterization, and engineering of carbohydrate acting enzymes. Metagenomics, directed evolution, and protein / metabolic engineering are combined with high-throughput screening approaches to select for new and improved enzyme activities or microorganisms with optimized functions.
