Strategy

The Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute aims to excel in interdisciplinary fundamental biomolecular research on prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms, which comprise the richest biological reservoir of metabolic diversity on the planet. GBB advances on new biotechnological applications through molecular- and synthetic biology approaches, offers a stimulating environment for research and training, and maintains state-of-the-art infrastructure.

Ambition

To become a Centre of Excellence for Advanced Microbial Sciences. GBB has the critical mass of theoretical and experimental research directions, unique facilities, and an internationally recognized staff to embark on this goal. To strengthen the institute’s profile, we envision expansion in the area of computational biology with a focus on microbial processes and systems biology, and we will invest in strategic interactions with leading researchers with complementary expertise.

Profile

Due to a tradition of highly multidisciplinary collaborative research with specialisation in key areas, GBB has achieved a strong reputation in protein structure determination and analysis, biochemistry, molecular genetics, and molecular cell- and microbiology. The research programme of GBB primarily targets fundamental questions (e.g. signal transduction, metabolic pathways, transport, organelle biogenesis, regulatory networks) to unraveling the functioning of living cells in their environment. This top notch knowledge feeds the research projects that focus on bio(nano)technological and / or medically relevant applications.
