IO+ interview with Tamalika Banerjee: Pioneering energy-efficient AI

11 November 2025

Artificial intelligence is transforming industries at record speed — but that progress comes with a growing cost: energy consumption. At CogniGron, Prof. Tamalika Banerjee is determined to change that.

Through her startup IMChip, Tamalika and her team are developing neuromorphic computer chips inspired by the human brain. Unlike traditional processors, these chips combine processing and memory in one place — mimicking how neurons and synapses work. The result? Computing that’s up to 200 times more energy-efficient than conventional hardware.

In a recent IO+ interview, Tamalika shares how her journey from fundamental physics to sustainable computing is driven by a deep sense of responsibility. She will also be one of the keynote speakers at the Watt Matters in AI conference, where she will explore how physics, materials science, and computing can converge to make AI both powerful and sustainable.
