Do I need permission from publishers, museums, archaeological or art-historical institutions, etc. to include images in my thesis?

  • Copyrighted images

If you wish to use copyrighted images, you will need to request permission in advance.
However, this is not necessary if these images have been made available under a licence that permits reuse (usually a CC licence). Only in that case is it not necessary to request permission in advance.
You must, however, provide a proper source citation; preferably, state which CC licence the image is licensed under.

  • Homemade images

There is no single, general answer regarding the use of photographs you have taken of museum objects. 

- Museums may have their own rules, and these rules may also vary from one collection to another. 
- Sometimes photography is not permitted at all in a museum. 
- Sometimes photography is permitted, but the photos may only be used for personal purposes, in which case they cannot be included in a thesis that will be made publicly availabl
