Provenance and acquisition
Biography
This collection contains many different editions that all share one characteristic: they are examples of marginaal drukwerk. In English, this is most closely translated as material from a private press. Unlike commercial printing, these publications are produced in small print runs. The focus is more on the uniqueness of the work and the craftsmanship of printing than on selling as many copies as possible.
The private press movement is considered the precursor to marginaal drukwerk. The very first private press in the Netherlands was De Zilverdistel, founded in 1910. The term private press was widely used, especially before World War II, and was associated with high quality and idealistic values. After the war, terms such as margedrukwerk and Drukwerk in de marge came into fashion to describe printed matter that distinguished itself from amateur work.
The marginaal drukwerk in this collection has been acquired over the years through purchases, donations, and subscriptions. The collection continues to grow. For example, the library acquires one copy each year of the bibliophile editions published by the Stichting De Roos.
Acquisition
The collection consists of materials that have been purchased or donated. Some volumes have also been acquired through subscriptions. The collection continues to grow.
