SmartCat behind the scenes
The UL has been using the SmartCat catalogue for several years now. Behind the scenes, however, in 2016 (after 20 years) the UL converted to a new system: Worldshare Management Services (WMS). This improves the link between the user side (SmartCat) and the underlying system, which enables us, among other things, to make electronic publications more available to our clients. Various departments within the UL have spent a lot of time and energy on introducing and improving the new system.
In order to enable the conversion to WMS, we had to freeze the processes for ordering, receiving and processing new books for a month. The inevitable backlog was resolved later that year.
The introduction of WMS also resulted in other improvements: loan periods can now be automatically extended and separate library card numbers are no longer needed: UG staff and students can now simply use their own P or S number.
