Allert Bijleveld wins 2015 Wadden Academy Prize
On October 15th, Dr. Allert Bijleveld was presented with the Wadden Academy Prize for his thesis on red knots (Calidris canutus). The jury was unanimous in its opinion that Bijleveld’s innovative and multifaceted research represents a significant contribution to knowledge about the Wadden Sea. His research, focusing on the red knot, has provided important insights into the distribution of top predators in the Wadden Sea, an uncharted field so far.
There were 15 entries for the Wadden Academy Prize 2015, including three PhD theses with the cum laude predicate. Bijleveld gained his PhD cum laude on June 19th, 2015; his supervisor was Prof. Theunis Piersma (Groningen Institute for Evolutionary Life Sciences). Bijleveld currently works as a researcher at the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ).
