How do you keep your employees motivated? How do you optimize team performance? And how do you strategically align human resources with the goals of the organization?

The Master of Science in Human Resource Management (HRM) aims to graduate students who are able to define, analyze, and evaluate problems and issues related to the management of work and employment of people in organizations.In the MScHRM you will gain academic knowledge and skills to consider and explore how HRM policies and practices can be developed and applied to ensure the availability, employability, commitment and vitality of employees needed to accomplish organisational goals. You will learn to do this by taking an evidence-based, scientific approach. This will prepare you for a professional HR career in any type of organization.

In the one-year Master's degree program in HRM you follow courses that cover both a strategic and a behavioural perspective of HR. You will learn to match the supply and demand of labour, both at a macro and micro-level, and to anticipate internal and external changes that affect the management of work and people in an organization. You will learn about factors that play a role this process (such as law, pay, leadership, and teams) and will also have the possibility to expand this with other topics (for example, technological development, internationalization of business, or business ethics). You complete the programme by performing research and writing a thesis.

    A very interesting field of expertise

    My expectations of the HRM programme were absolutely justified. The human resources within organizations have proven to be even more important than I had expected. The ways of influencing them and balancing for example the demand and supply of human capital in combination with legislation is a complex but very interesting field of expertise.

    "I’ve always been interested in the human capital of organizations and the psychological and managerial difficulties and possibilities it involves. When I got the possibility to participate in the pre-master programme to get access to the HRM-master programme the choice therefore was not very hard to make. I had just completed my study Facility Management and was pretty sure that the HRM master could broaden my knowledge and expertise level and above all would be a very interesting and challenging experience.

    Two years later and very close to finishing the masters programme HRM, I can conclude that my expectations at the beginning were absolutely justified. The human resources within organizations have proven to be even more important than I had expected. The ways of influencing them and balancing for example the demand and supply of human capital in combination with legislation is a complex but very interesting field of expertise.

    The build-up of the programme challenges students to face those complex problems within organizations and to use existing literature to come up with the most effective solutions. I have experienced this as a very good way of approaching HRM-related problems. Students were actively involved in the different courses and lecturers were able to communicate their enthusiasm about the field.

    When writing the master thesis and using real time data from existing organizations, I had to use all my experiences from the previous semester to deal with HRM processes within organizations. I am sure that my future job will be within the HRM sector. Working at for example a large consultancy firm or at the HRM department of an international organization seems very challenging and different every day."

    The Master's course units offer students an understanding of the strategic, managerial, economic, professional, international and legal aspects of Human Resource Management. As well as the compulsory course units, the Faculty offers students a range of electives and extracurricular courses in which you can gain more knowledge and experience of subjects related to HRM.

    I have chosen to take extracurricular courses in Healthcare Management. Once I have completed my Master's thesis on an HRM subject in the healthcare industry, I will be able to add the Healthcare Management Certificate to my MSc HRM degree certificate.

    The HRM Master's programme also gives students at the Faculty of Economics and Business many opportunities to develop professional business skills. I joined the Master's Community HRM committee '14-'15 as chair and gained experience as a team player and leader."
