This week's edition of
Elsevier Weekblad
(a Dutch weekly) takes
Martin van Hees
, Dean and P
rofessor of Ethics and Political Theory, to be one of the most influential political thinkers in the Netherlands. Other philosophers that are mentioned are
Charles Taylor, Theodore Dalrymple, Michael Sandel, Peter Singer and Amartya Sen.
Translated from the introduction of the Elsevier article:
"Ideas matter. Politicians and policy makers base their decisions on the theories of philosophers, economists and writers. Is it right that rich people pay more taxes than the poor? What is good education? Can abortion be justified? These are difficult questions, and so it helps to have a smart philosopher or a challenging intellectual close at hand.
Elsevier addressed the scientific bureaus of political parties in The Hague and asked which "living thinkers" are actually read and considered inspiring by politicians and their staff."
