Studieverenigingen

  • NUTS

NUTS has been the study association of the English department in Groningen for over 40 years, and we are still going strong. We make studying English a lot of fun by organising all sorts of activities throughout the year.

Our diverse events include: drinks, high-teas, pub crawls, pub quizzes, book clubs, game nights and career events. As a NUTS-member, you benefit from a discount on your study books at Studystore (via our website) and free entrance to most of our events. Besides this, NUTS annually organizes a trip to the UK or Ireland.

It is an amazing feeling to combine my studies with literature of any kind

    Literature is my passion

I decided to study English here because the degree programme has a very good reputation – I opted for quality. And I also really like the city of Groningen. After a thorough, compulsory grounding in the first year, the degree programme allows you to focus on what you like within the field of English. Literature is my passion. Everything I have learnt here so far has only confirmed and increased my love for it, and my study trip to Stratford also contributed. I would like to go beyond just analysing literature from a cultural-historical perspective. Literature has so much more to offer, and I think that the Master's degree programme in Literary and Cultural Studies in Groningen may do just that. This Master's degree programme offers a lot of freedom so you can focus on what interests you most. You are of course yourself responsible for making the most of your time at university. I am now following the Honours College, but given the choice again I think I would have opted for a second degree programme. Philosophy perhaps, or Arts, Culture and Media.

The Bachelor's programme in English is highly regarded and very varied

Hi! I’m Charlotte, I’m 21 years old and I’m now in the third year of my Bachelor’s degree programme in English Language and Culture. I’ve been born and raised in Groningen, so I’m a real  stadjer  as well as a student. Alongside my studies, I like to read, cycle and go to the gym.

    Why English Language and Culture?

I’ve always been interested in the English language and culture. My love for reading, literature and history played a big role in my choice of programme. Apart from that, the Bachelor’s programme in English is highly regarded and very varied. It has something for everyone, whether you prefer literature or linguistics. As there aren’t that many students, you get to know most people in your year. This creates a personal, positive and safe atmosphere.
