Mission & Vision

At CogniGron (Groningen Cognitive Systems and Materials Centre), we are reimagining the future of computing: one inspired by the remarkable efficiency of the human brain. Founded in 2018 thanks to a generous donation from the Ubbo Emmius Foundation, CogniGron collaborates with FSE’s Bernoulli Institute for Mathematics, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, the Engineering and Technology institute Groningen and the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials, uniting expertises across disciplines to pioneer a new generation of brain-inspired computing.

Our mission is to make a lasting difference in the field of neuromorphic computing: developing materials, devices, and algorithms that work together in harmony, just as neurons and synapses do in the brain. We aim to move beyond the limits of conventional silicon technology, crafting computing architectures that are not only powerful, but profoundly energy-efficient and sustainable.

What makes this mission possible is our belief in synergy: progress happens when physicists, materials scientists, computer scientists, and engineers speak a common language. At CogniGron, we cultivate this interdisciplinary dialogue and train a new generation of researchers who embody it.

We are proud to contribute to a global movement that takes inspiration from initiatives like the Human Brain Project and industrial pioneers such as IBM and HP, while forging our own path through the unique combination of advanced materials science and cognitive computing.

Our ultimate goal is not just to create better chips, but to help build an open, interdisciplinary ecosystem, where scientific breakthroughs become shared building blocks. Where engineers, physicists, designers, and entrepreneurs work side by side. And where brain-inspired, energy-efficient computing moves from the lab into the world. As we look ahead, we see computing evolving into something more organic: efficient, adaptive, and ready for what’s next.
