DOI / ISBN

How do I apply for a DOI?
A DOI (Digital Object Identifier) is important as an identifier for a publication. A DOI will be assigned to all PhD theses by the University of Groningen Library, this will be done after the PhD thesis has been submitted via Hora Finita.
PhD students don’t have to request a DOI for their dissertation or add it to their dissertation. The DOI will appear on the thesis landing page in the RUG research portal.

Can I include the DOI of my thesis in the printed version of my thesis?
The DOI is generated by the University Library once we have processed the final version of your thesis.
We generate DOIs once a week in a batch. As the DOI is a Digital Object Identifier, it is linked to the digital version of your thesis and therefore does not need to be included in the printed version.
The DOI links to the landing page for your thesis on the University of Groningen’s research portal and contains a URL. This is also why we only generate the DOI once we have added your thesis to the research portal. -
Can I still request an ISBN number?
No, you cannot request an ISBN via the UB anymore.
Some printing companies offer to request an ISBN for your thesis; you can ignore this option.
For the findability of the thesis, a DOI is more important and useful.
