Open access deal reached with Wolters Kluwer

The Association of Universities in the Netherlands (VSNU) has reached an agreement on green open access with Wolters Kluwer, the main publisher of legal and fiscal literature. Twenty-seven academic journals in Wolters Kluwer’s portfolio will be subject to new and explicit open access embargo rules.

In short, the deal allows Dutch-based authors to make their accepted author’s manuscript (AAM) available in their institutional repository after an embargo period (the length of the embargo will depend on the journal but will be between 6 and 12 months). In order to be eligible for this deal, articles have to qualify as ‘scientific’. Wolters Kluwer has set the following criteria for evaluating the eligibility of publications:

  • presence of a research question
  • use of academic references
  • use of a scientific method
  • production of new knowledge or insights
  • adequacy
  • production of ground-breaking results

At least two of the above criteria need to be met for publications to be considered ‘scientific’. Wolters Kluwer editors are responsible for assessing the eligibility of publications (on request of the author).

The deal does not apply to Wolters Kluwer’s portfolio of professional journals.
