NWO funding for 'flipping' journals to diamond open access
The Dutch Research Council NWO supports academic journals that wish to transition from a subscription model to an open access model in which authors do not have to pay publication fees. They can soon apply for a subsidy from a new programme: the Diamond Open Access fund. A total of €500,000 is available in this round.
The funding is intended for editorial boards, academic societies, foundations, and associations that want to ‘flip’ their existing academic subscription journal to a diamond open access model.
Diamond open access, where neither readers nor authors bear any costs, is one of the potential alternatives that can bring about change to the current publishing system. In recent years, several editorial boards of leading academic journals have left commercial publishers and transformed their journals into non-profit, diamond open access journals. This new funding instrument aims to support that movement as well.
Are you a UG-affiliated editor or editorial board member and do you consider applying for this funding? Our Open Access support team is happy to assist and advise.
The University of Groningen sees diamond open access as a sustainable, affordable and fair model for scholarly publishing and supports several international diamond open access initiatives. The University of Groningen Press is a diamond open access publisher as well.
