Welcome at the Science Shop for Mathematics and Natural Sciences


Research for citizens and civil society organisations by students and scientists of the Faculty Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Groningen. 

Civil Society Organizations:

Do you encounter a practical or societal problem?
Are you looking for scientific advice?
Do you have questions about scientific research?  

Students:

Are you looking for a research question for your BSc or MSc project?
Would you like to study a problem with practical relevance? 

Teacher/scientist:

Are you looking for an interesting and relevant case?
Are you looking for applications for your research?
Would you like to perform or supervise research with partners from civil society organizations? 

In that case, the Science Shop is your partner! 

We can perform scientific research in the fields of chemistry, nature & environment, occupational safety and health, pharmaceutical drugs etc. In general, we mediate for civil society organizations like foundations, unions, local civic groups, environmental or patient groups and local authorities.The aim is to have no financial obstacle for such groups to have their research performed: if no money can be made available, the research may be executed free of charge.Businesses and industry looking for scientific advice can turn to the Transfer en Liaison Group of the university. If you are not sure whether your question can be answered by the Science Shop, please contact us for advice at wewi-fwn@rug.nl.

Are you a student in pharmacy, biology, physics, chemistry or a related discipline? You are welcome to take on one of our research projects. We offer projects suitable as BSc or MSc thesis subjects, as well as smaller projects which will earn you extra ECTS points. Our open questions can be found here but we often have more topics in store, so contact us to discuss your opportunities.

The mission of the Science Shop is:

  1. To deploy academic expertise for the benefit of nonprofit groups and organizations which represent apublic interest.
  2. To contribute to practice based education, social engagement and the acquisition of communication skills by students.
  3. To observe important trends and themes in society and to introduce these topics into the regular study and research programs of the university.
