Research Groups:
Prehistory and Protohistory of Northwest Europe
Researchers interested in doing a PhD or a Postdoctoral Fellowship on the archaeology of the Netherlands are invited to contat Prof. D.C.M. Raemaekers (d.c.m.raemaekers@rug.nl). We are especially interested in topics related to the long-term development of prehistoric cultural landscapes, terp-mound archaeology, and material culture studies.
Classical and Mediterranean Archaeology
The GIA's chair of Classical and Mediterranean Archaeology carries out research in landscape and settlement archaeology of Central and Southern Italy from the Bronze Age to the Roman period with a particular interest in architectural, ritual and funerary archaeological studies of protohistoric Lazio (Iron Age and Archaic periods). Researchers interested in doing a PhD or a Postdoctoral Fellowship in these fields of study, may contact Prof. P.A.J. Attema (p.a.j.attema rug.nl).
Greek Archaeology
Researchers interested in doing a PhD or a Postdoctoral Fellowship on Aegean Prehistory (especially on the Greek mainland in the Bronze Age, mortuary studies and the study of ritual, the archaeology of houses and households, the history of Greek prehistoric archaeology, or the role of archaeology in modern Greek society) are welcome to contact Prof. S. Voutsaki (s.voutsaki rug.nl).
Researchers interested in doing a PhD or a Postdoctoral Fellowship on the Hellenistic and Roman periods in the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East (especially on settlement patterns, mortuary studies and the impact of imperialism) should contact Dr. Lidewijde de Jong (lidewijde.de.jong rug.nl).
Arctic Archaeology
Researchers interested in doing a PhD or a Postdoctoral Fellowship on the prehistoric-, historic- or ethno-archaeology of the circumpolar North are invited to take up contact with Professor Peter Jordan, Director of the Arctic Centre (p.d.jordan rug.nl). We have extensive international collaborative networks that span Eurasia and North America, and we are especially interested in themes linked to technology and material culture studies, subsistence and palaeoecology, human-environment relations and cultural landscape research.
Environmental Archaeology
Researchers interested in doing a PhD or a Postdoctoral Fellowship on the reconstruction of former vegetations or the modelling of ancient food economies in the Netherlands, the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East (including Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Egypt and Sudan) should contact Prof. René Cappers (r.t.j.cappers@rug.nl).
